Americans have been dealing with inflation for more than a year now, leading to more expensive gas and grocery bills. Yet for some reason, the Department of the Interior has been cancelling natural gas and oil lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico that could help ease the pain at the pump and in the pocketbook. What’s more, the Department’s newest draft program leaves the door open to not holding any lease sales for the next 5 years.

That’s a long time to leave new opportunities to develop America’s natural resources off the table. The Department needs to get serious about fulfilling its mission – required by law – of managing federal lands and waters for our country’s benefit. By delaying and cancelling offshore lease sales, the Department is doing the opposite, making it harder for companies to plan for new opportunities in the Gulf. That means less investment in our energy sector, fewer jobs created, and a harder road to bringing down energy prices.
