Tour Historic Decatur House
The White House Historical Association offers free public tours of historic Decatur House. Since 1818, Decatur House has been home to foreign and American dignitaries, secretaries of state, members of Congress, and a vice president, in addition to numerous free and enslaved servants who played a pivotal role in shaping America.
WHHA Collection: ‘A Tempest in a Teapot’
In 1929, First Lady Lou Hoover invited Jessie L. DePriest to a White House tea party. This traditional act of hospitality toward the wife of the first black man elected to Congress in the twentieth century created a political crisis for the Hoovers. Explore the “tempest” from the perspectives of the first lady, the DePriests and DePriest descendants.
