A leaked Supreme Court document has all but confirmed the worst case for the reproductive justice movement. If this leaked decision holds, Roe v. Wade will soon be overturned. People will die as a result.
And now, we wait for the Court’s decision in the most important gun safety case in over a decade—NYSRPA v. Bruen—where a bad decision could weaken gun laws and allow more guns in more places. Together, these two rulings could lead to more senseless, preventable suffering and death—particularly for people in marginalized communities.
This work can be tiring and frustrating, but it must be done. And if we’ve learned anything over the past decade, it’s that elections matter.
If the Supreme Court is going to strike down our rights and protections, it will be up to the states to respond to keep us safe. We need to start working now to mitigate any damage that comes from the courts—and that begins by electing gun sense lawmakers up and down the ticket.
The leaked document shows the Supreme Court could call into question the constitutional right to privacy—which protects not only abortion access, but also marriage equality and birth control access.
Nothing is off the table with this Supreme Court.
