Ocean and climate, Ocean Week and On Course workshops
An important month for the ocean!
As the world’s attention is focused on the COP 26 meetings in Glasgow where critical climate talks are going on during the coming weeks, we want to remind you that we have resources available to help you and your students understand the role the ocean plays in preventing climate change.
Free to download in six languages, ‘Our ocean, our hero’comprises a beautiful video about the ocean and all that it does for us, and supporting resources including worksheets and a lesson plan for teachers. The video is available on our Learning YouTube channel and the resources can be downloaded through The Ocean Race Learning website in English, French, Italian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Spanish.
Some of our team will travel to COP 26 in Glasgow to meet youth engaged in climate action, and later in November we will take part in the Beyond COP 21 Symposium exhibit at Dulwich College in London. There we will share our resources with hundreds of students and teachers and we also look forward to speaking to students and integrating their feedback and recommendations into the development of future resources.

On Course: A guide to delivering ‘Champions for the Sea’
This month we will run a number of our ‘On Course’ workshops. These workshops are designed to help you to deliver our Champions for the Sea Learning programme. Two online sessions will be run in English, one specifically for teachers and the other for anyone who wants to deliver the programme at home or within their community. The two-hour long workshop sessions are interactive, based on activities that you might use with young learners, and provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and ask questions. We’re off to Cabo Verde!
Cabo Verde will be one of the stops during the next round-the-world Race and this month some of our Learning team will visit the islands for their annual ‘Ocean Week’. We look forward to meeting teachers there and talking to them about how they can support their learners to become Champions for the Sea!
As part of our visit an in-person On Course workshop will take place on the morning of the 25th of November in Mindelo. The workshop, delivered in Portuguese, will help teachers learn the ropes and get the most out of our Champions for the Sea programme with their students.

Topic 1 relaunch: One Amazing Ocean

Our redesigned Topic 1 called ‘One Amazing Ocean’ will be launched very soon in seven languages: Danish, Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese [BR], Mandarin and Spanish. This topic tells the fascinating history of The Ocean Race, one of the most extreme races in the world and highlights how amazing the ocean is and how it is our biggest climate hero. We have created some beautiful new worksheets and lesson plan resources to help bring to life some of the wonders of the ocean for young learners. The topic is already available in English, free to download from our website.

About The Ocean Race
Since 1973, The Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test of a team and a human adventure like no other. Over four decades it has kept an almost mythical hold over some of the greatest sailors and been the proving ground for the legends of our sport.
The last edition of the race was the closest in history, with three teams virtually tied, approaching the finish line. After 126 days of racing spread across 11 legs, the winning margin for Charles Caudrelier’s Dongfeng Race Team was only 16 minutes. The top three teams were separated by just four points.
The next edition of The Ocean Race will start from Alicante, Spain next winter and will finish in Genova, Italy in summer of 2023.
