Progress Arizona
Reconciliation. Congress is still negotiating the Build Back Better plan after cutting out several popular provisions in order to win over Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin. The package has gone from an estimated $3.5T to $1.75T, leaving out policies like paid family leave and free community college. While Build Back Better still contains critical policies despite the cuts, it continues to remain important to elect progressives to Congress so we can fight the climate crisis and invest in working families.
Lobbyist cash. Last week, it was reported that Senators Sinema and Manchin have received the most cash from lobbyists out of their Senate cohort, with donations increasing over the past several months. Read more about it here.
Ducey’s legacy. Gov. Doug Ducey plans to continue fighting COVID-19 mitigation measures such as mask mandates in schools and vaccine or negative test requirements. The pandemic in Arizona has become more deadly than New York, remaining the leading cause of death in our state. Ducey has also misused COVID-19 relief funds for his own political gain in his attempts to prevent Arizona public schools from requiring masking.
Sinematics. Last week, community members continued to put pressure on Kyrsten Sinema as Congress negotiated the Build Back Better package. Activists with the Sunrise Movement camped out in front of her office for three days and two nights in support of policies to combat the climate crisis and to help working families.
