Teams Hard at Work in Haiti and Mississippi

Samaritan’s Purse has deployed an Emergency Field Hospital to Haiti to provide lifesaving care for many of the thousands who were injured Saturday when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake killed over 2,100 people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes. In Jackson, Mississippi, our Emergency Field Hospital opened yesterday and received its first COVID-19 patient.

Field Hospital Going Up in Haiti

The trauma unit sent to Haiti includes three wards, an emergency room, a pharmacy, and an operating room capable of handling orthopedic and trauma surgeries. The 36-bed facility is staffed by a Samaritan’s Purse DART (disaster assistance response team) that includes doctors, nurses, and other healthcare specialists. Hospitals in the western part of Haiti where the earthquake struck are overwhelmed with injured people. Basic medicines, such as painkillers and antibiotics, are scarce. Our team is also prepared to respond to the growing threat of illness as affected areas are at a high risk for the spread of COVID-19. Today, a third airlift delivered an additional 30 tons of emergency supplies to help bring relief to those who are suffering.Donate to Haiti

First Patient Received in Mississippi

Our Emergency Field Hospital in Mississippi is now open. It’s located on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus and can serve up to 32 patients at a time. Five of the beds are set aside for an Intensive Care Unit (ICU); previously, there were no ICU beds available in the entire state. Our facility is staffed by dozens of Samaritan’s Purse DART members responding as the state has reported over 15,000 new coronavirus cases during the past three days.Donate to Mississippi
