D-backs
D-backs Draft NewsJuly 11, 2021View OnlineD-backs select Jordan Lawlar No. 6 overall in 2021 MLB DraftWith the sixth overall pick, the D-backs selected shortstop Jordan Lawlar out of Jesuit Prep HS (TX). Lawlar, who stands 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, ranked as the No. 3 Draft prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the second-best prep player in the class. He became the second player ever drafted out of Jesuit Prep and the first to go in the first round.
Lawlar has drawn comps to MLB’s No. 7 overall prospect Bobby Witt Jr., as both hail from the state of Texas. Lawlar, a right-handed batter, can hit for both contact and power from the plate thanks to his quick hands and refined approach at the plate. He is the highest selection the D-backs have made since they took another shortstop No. 1 overall in Dansby Swanson in 2015. Lawlar is committed to Swanson’s alma mater Vanderbilt, but the chance he ever puts on a Commodores jersey is slim.
