When laws are broken, wrongdoers must be held accountable. But the Federal Election Commission is refusing to take action against flagrant violations of campaign finance law by one of the biggest moneyed interests in our election system, the National Rifle Association.
Campaign finance laws are supposed to limit the influence of wealthy special interests on our politics. We need the FEC to do its job and enforce those laws, especially when there is evidence of massive evasion by powerful groups. Help us continue to watchdog the watchdogs, and demand enforcement of the law. Make a donation today to Campaign Legal Center.
CLC Action, a sister organization of Campaign Legal Center, filed a lawsuit today against the FEC because when the FEC fails to uphold its responsibilities, it clears a path for wealthy special interests to use money to overpower the voices of everyday people. CLC Action is representing Giffords, the organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
There is strong evidence that the NRA has evaded the laws that prevent groups from coordinating their election spending with campaigns, including the Trump presidential campaign in 2016. According to the Supreme Court, groups like the NRA can only make unlimited expenditures on elections if they are independent of the candidates they support. That’s not what was happening here.
Wealthy special interests across the political spectrum are bending the rules to spend tens of millions of dollars buying influence, and the FEC is letting them get away with it. This lawsuit isn’t about the policies the NRA promotes; it is about standing up for the rights of ordinary Americans to have their voices heard. We need you to stand with us. Support Campaign Legal Center by making a gift today, of whatever amount you can afford.
The FEC’s record of not enforcing the law sends a clear message to wealthy special interests: You can push the envelope or even cross the line, and get away with it. Say it with us: enough is enough. Your donation helps us keep up the fight.
Thank you for all that you do for our democracy.
