The best (and worst) times to snack, according to science
|
|
Around 95% of people eat at least one snack per day—and those everyday, smaller bites can totally impact your health, according to research.1 Here’s how:
- First, quality matters: Those who ate lower-quality snacks (candy, cookies, cake, etc.) reported feeling more hungry, compared to those who ate higher-quality snacks (nuts, fruit, vegetables, etc.).
- The lower-quality snack group also experienced worse cardiometabolic biomarkers (higher lipids and insulin resistance).
- Researchers found that morning snackers tended to eat higher-quality snacks and ended up eating less calories throughout the day.
- Evening snackers (especially those who snack after 9 p.m.), had higher blood sugar levels and poorer blood fat responses after eating. Interestingly, this effect was reduced if participants ate higher-quality snacks.
Ultimately, there’s no one right answer to when you should snack—just try to make it a high-quality one, if you can.
