Washington, D.C. — Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-09), issued the following statement after introducing H.R. 2841, the Putting Trust in Transparency Act, legislation that requires nongovernmental organizations (NGO) that receive federal funding to publicly disclose their donors.
“Over the past decade, NGO’s have increasingly played an outsized role in facilitating woke policies including radical climate proposals, locking up federal lands and assisting in the transportation of illegal aliens from the southern border to communities across our country. Sadly, the federal government, by providing significant taxpayer dollars to NGOs, is complicit in promoting such liberal-biased agendas.
Rather than serving impartial and legitimate initiatives, NGOs all too often fleece American taxpayers of hundreds of millions of dollars by engaging in advocacy efforts that advance their politically motivated schemes.
The American people have a right to know how their money is spent and who funds taxpayer-supported NGOs. The Putting Trust in Transparency Act protects taxpayers by mandating that any NGO that receives funds from the federal government must publicly disclose their extravagant donors.
Ensuring transparency in funding, my legislation encourages NGOs operate in clear neutral boundaries rather than advancing radical causes on the taxpayers’ dime,” stated Congressman Gosar.
Background:
Under current law, NGOs are required to report their private contributions over $5,000, including the name, address, and zip code of the donor, and the specific amount of the contribution. The IRS claims this information is published online, but the form is almost entirely redacted and it is not available government-wide.
The Putting Trust in Transparency Act requires that IRS Form 990 Schedule B be published within 60 days of filing, with the name, zip code, and amount of contribution fully unredacted.
