Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.•On this day in 1908: The Boy Scout movement began in England when Robert Baden-Powell, a lieutenant general in the British Army, published the first installment of “Scouting for Boys,” a handbook designed to train children in basic survival skills, wood crafting, self-improvement and discipline. The manual became a huge success, and scores of impromptu Scout troops popped up across the country shortly thereafter.•In 1940: The film adaptation of “The Grapes of Wrath,” based on John Steinbeck’s 1939 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, had its world premiere in New York City. It is widely considered as one of the greatest films of all time, garnering seven Academy Award nominations.•In 1984: Apple launched its Macintosh personal computer for sale in the U.S., two days after its famous Super Bowl commercial. The first mass-market, all-in-one desktop personal computer that featured a graphical user interface with a mouse, the Macintosh retailed for $2,495.•In 2003: The Department of Homeland Security officially began operations as former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge was sworn in as the agency’s first secretary.•In 2006: Disney announced that it would acquire Pixar Animation Studios for $7.4 billion in an all-stock transaction.•In 2018: Larry Nassar, a disgraced former physician for the U.S. women’s national gymnastics team and Michigan State University, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexual assault. Nassar was charged with sexually abusing and assaulting hundreds of young athletes in his care in what became the largest sex abuse scandal in the sport’s history.
