Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1980: The Navy’s USS Parsons, based in San Diego, rescued 110 Vietnamese refugees 330 miles south of Saigon.
In 1998: Astronaut John Glenn, at age 77, became the oldest person to travel into space as part of the Space Shuttle Discovery crew.
In 2004: Osama bin Laden admitted for the first time in a videotaped statement that he had ordered the Sept. 11 attacks, and told Americans that “the best way to avoid another Manhattan” was to stop threatening Muslims’ security.
In 2012: Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the U.S. East Coast, causing hundreds of deaths and nearly $70 billion in damages.
In 2015: China announced the end of their one-child policy after 35 years.
In 2022: Hundreds of people in South Korea were crushed as a large crowd pushed through narrow streets during Halloween festivities in Seoul, leaving 150 killed and dozens more injured.
