Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 312: Roman Emperor Constantine the Great defeated the superior forces of his rival Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, securing his position as the sole ruler of the Western Roman Empire. This was a game-changer in the history of the Western world, as it was Constantine, a Christian convert, who would establish Christianity as the official religion of Rome.
In 1846: William Morton successfully demonstrated the use of ether as an anesthetic for surgery, revolutionizing the field of medicine.
In 1886: The final pieces of the Statue of Liberty were assembled on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and the monument – a gift from the people of France – was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland.
In 1940: Fascist Italy, under the leadership of Benito Mussolini, launched an invasion and occupation of Greece during World War II.
In 1962: Much to the relief of the world, President John F. Kennedy welcomed Russia’s announcement that it would dismantle its missiles based in Cuba, ending the Cuban missile crisis.
In 1965: Construction of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, was completed. Architect Eero Saarinen designed the 630-foot monument and commemorates the role of St. Louis in the westward expansion of the United States.
