Your Elite Tip… Tee Shots.

There are some holes that just don’t set up quite right for your game. Maybe it’s a dog leg left and your natural shot is a fade. Maybe there are bunkers or other hazards in the landing area that you just know you won’t be able to avoid. Maybe it’s just an intimidating layout and you can’t visualize yourself hitting the right shot.

No matter what the reason teeing your ball up on a hole that doesn’t suit your game can be challenging to say the least. Frozen by fear it’s easy to just grab your driver, take a big swing, and pray for the best. Unfortunately, the golf gods aren’t always listening.

Here’s a better strategy for handling those awkward tee shots…

Acknowledge your discomfort. When you’re faced with a tee shot that doesn’t fit your game the first thing you need to do is acknowledge it. This will allow you to start thinking clearly about a strategy that will put you in the best position for your second shot.

Club down. Pulling out your driver on a hole that doesn’t suit your game is a recipe for disaster. Instead club down to a fairway wood, hybrid, or long to mid iron. When selecting a club you’ll want to balance of your ability to keep it in play, how it will set up your second shot, and your appetite for risk.

Work the ball. For advanced players working the ball is a great way to manage holes that don’t fit their natural ball flight. If you’re going to experiment with this strategy make sure you never aim in a place that will punish you for hitting a straight shot. If you are trying to hit a draw down the middle of the fairway make sure your ball will still end up in play if it doesn’t curve as you’ve planned.

Focusing on these tips will make those awkward tee shots much easier to manage, and lower your scores!
