Alumnus Takes Statistics Career to his Third Olympics with Team USA Men’s Volleyball

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, alumnus Nate Ngo (Mathematics, ’10) is taking Learn by Doing to the next level.

As a technical coordinator for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Ngo’s duties include tracking and analyzing statistics and scouting for the team. It’s a role he’s played in three consecutive Summer Olympics and one he prepared for as a student at Cal Poly.

“Learn by Doing, that’s what I’ve been doing this whole time. And I certainly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my experience at Cal Poly.” Ngo said.

Recap: First Cal Poly Night at Oracle Park

Over 1,500 Cal Poly Proud alumni filled Oracle Park on Friday, July 12, during the first

Cal Poly Night with the San Francisco Giants.

Alumnus and astronaut Victor Glover (General Engineering, ’99) threw out the first pitch to kick off the night. The evening continued with an on-field visit by San Francisco Giants announcer and alumnus Mike Krukow (Physical Education, ’73), a national anthem performance from Cal Poly Women’s Beach Volleyball alumni and more.

Travel the World with Cal Poly Alumni

The Cal Poly Alumni Association (CPAA) has partnered with AHI Travel to offer alumni discounts on group travel, providing several amazing trip options every year.

“My wife and I went to Ireland through the CPAA and we absolutely loved it,” said Terry Morgan (Social Sciences, ’87). “You save a lot of time and energy by not having to do (the planning) yourself.”

Upcoming trips include tours of Spain, a cruise down the Rhine and Moselle rivers, a journey to South Africa and more.

Student Invention Aims to Prevent Concussions

A group of students are dedicated to addressing the critical issue of concussions head-on by using innovative technology to revolutionize athlete safety.

“I’ve felt the effects of concussions and seen many of my teammates affected by them, so this is something very close to my heart,” said Cal Poly economics and entrepreneurship graduate Connor Heffler, CEO of ODIN and former Cal Poly football player.

ODIN secured first place and a $15,000 prize at the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s annual Innovation Quest for its portable headset that tracks eye movements to diagnose concussions.

“I knew I couldn’t develop ODIN on my own. I recruited engineers dedicated to making a real difference, not just building something cool,” Heffler explained.
