The D-backs wrapped up the 2024 Draft on Tuesday with a 22-person class, tied for the most in the Majors thanks to having two compensation picks, which gave them three of the first 35 picks. Arizona used its first pick (No. 29 overall) to select prep outfielder Slade Caldwell, who at 5-foot-9 has drawn comparisons to Mets prospect Jet Wilson and D-backs outfielder Corbin Carroll.
Speaking of Carroll, the D-backs got a Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick (No. 31 overall) because he won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2023 and used it on Kentucky outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt, who helped the Wildcats reach the College World Series this year for the first time in school history.
The D-backs took 12 pitchers and 10 position players. They selected 14 college players and eight high schoolers. The D-backs believe they could wind up with a steal in fifth-round pick (No. 164 overall) RHP Connor Foley out of Indiana, who can hit 99 mph on the radar gun. Prep shortstop J.D. Dix was a favorite of MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, who believes Dix, who played at the same high school as former D-backs shortstop and current Cubs manager Craig Counsell, will be able to hit at the next level.
