Peter, it’s Bernie. I was elected to the House back in 1991, and I helped form the Progressive Caucus.
At our strongest back then, we were nowhere — and I mean nowhere — near where the Progressive Caucus is today.
The media will turn its back to this fact, but the truth is that the progressive movement has been extraordinarily successful in electing wonderful candidates to the U.S. House.
We’re talking about dozens and dozens of strong progressives — many of whom are women and women of color — that we have never had in the history of the United States Congress.
That is an incredible thing for the progressive movement in this country, and it was only possible because of years of effort from grassroots supporters like you.
But now that we are so big, there’s a target on our backs. We must come together and support progressives in the upcoming elections, because the corporate and political establishment are trying to destroy what we as progressives have built.
We must make it clear that we will fight to defend and elect strong progressives that prioritize the needs of working people, not the billionaire class, corporate lobbyists, and wealthy campaign contributors.
My hope in 2024 is that the progressive movement can come together to not only defeat Donald Trump, but to grow the number of strong progressive Democrats in Congress.
