The University Update – Your Connection to Cal Poly

The UU - University Update

Spring 2024 Commencement Recap!

This past spring, Cal Poly welcomed 6,700 new members to the alumni community! The weekend was full of emotion, pride and excitement as the class of 2024 walked the stage to begin their journey outside of the familiar classrooms and pathways of campus they’ve called home.

Meet six outstanding members of Cal Poly’s class of 2024, at the link below. These six “great grads” represent just a few of the many paths taken by our graduates as they enter the workforce ready to make an impact on day one.

From teaching the next generation, to embracing the cosmos or leaving their mark on the world through design, these graduates will join their fellow classmates in embracing the next stage of their lives as the true representation of Learn by Doing.

Astronaut Victor Glover Returns to Cal Poly Campus

In the thick of training for NASA’s upcoming lunar mission, alumnus and astronaut Victor Glover (General Engineering, ’99) returned to Cal Poly to speak with students about his experience.

“It’s always great to be here on campus,” Glover said. “Cal Poly has changed so much over the years and it’s really neat to see, but some things don’t change, like the focus on students.”

Glover currently has two daughters enrolled at Cal Poly — and he’s eagerly awaiting this fall, when his third daughter will become the newest Mustang in the family.

“I’m over the moon,” Glover said, noting the obvious pun. “This is not an easy school, but nothing risked, nothing gained. They’re growing, and I just love watching them become the young ladies they’re going to be.”

Alumnus and Soccer Coach Retires

After 31 seasons as head coach of the women’s soccer team, Alex Crozier (Civil Engineering, ’84) will retire at the end of the 2024 season.

“I never could have imagined a better job. I have had the honor and pleasure of working alongside, coaching and meeting so many great people,” Crozier said.

The only head coach in the history of the program and a record six-time Big West Coach of the Year, Crozier is one of the longest active tenured women’s soccer head coaches in all of Division I.

“I can’t predict the future,” Crozier said, “but I see big things ahead for this program, not only this coming fall, but for years to come. Go Mustangs!”

Professor Helps Students Feel at Home on Campus

When Professor Jenell Navarro first arrived on campus 12 years ago, she noticed that, “There weren’t a lot of institutionalized opportunities for Native American students to be seen or visible on campus,” she explained.

Now the department chair of the Ethnic Studies Department and former faculty advisor to the American Indian Student Association for 10 years, Navarro has seen several of the goals she had initially hoped for come to fruition. There is now an American Indian graduation ceremony, an annual American Indian education day and a new American Indian Student Association Scholarship.

“I have seen students stay in college and not leave because they were awarded this scholarship,” said Navarro.
