Today in history

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1898: U.S. Marines landed at Guantanamo Bay, part of a war in Cuba that led to the end of Spanish colonization in the Americas that had begun the year after the voyage of Christopher Columbus. After the Spanish surrendered, the Treaty of Paris gave the U.S. sovereignty of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Spain also relinquished Cuba.
In 1946: Jack Johnson, the first Black person to become heavyweight boxing champion, died after an automobile accident near Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1963: President John Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act. It aimed to eliminate the pay gap between men and women by prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender. Complaints seeking protection under the law must compare jobs with substantially equal skill level, effort and responsibility with similar working conditions at the same business.
In 1967: Israel signed a cease-fire agreement to end the Six-Day War as the victor. The agreement had been signed by neighboring foes Jordan and Egypt two days prior, as well as Syria the day before. During the war, Israel had taken the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsula, which led to the exodus of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Syrians who had lived in those areas.
In 2003: NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover mission began with the launching of the Spirit rover. Spirit traveled 4.8 miles across the Martian plains, discovering the planet was once much wetter than its current state. Spirit remained in operation for more than six years – over 25 times its life expectancy – until NASA ended efforts to contact it in 2011.
In 2020: The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. surpassed 2 million.
