On this day in 1916, during World War I, the Battle of Jutland began off the coast of Denmark. The conflict was the largest naval battle of the war. The British casualties more than doubled Germany’s, but the battle marked the last time in the war that the German fleet attempted to press into the North Sea. |

In 1921, a white mob began the Tulsa Race Massacre in Oklahoma, attacking the Greenwood District, also known as “Black Wall Street.” An estimated 100-300 Black people were killed as the mob looted and burned Black-owned businesses and homes, leaving thousands displaced. |

In 1955, just over a year after deciding Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision known as Brown II, pressing school districts to implement desegregation plans “with all deliberate speed.”. |

In 1985, an outbreak of more than 40 tornadoes hit Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, Canada, killing 89 people and injuring more than 1,000. |

In 2005, former FBI assistant director W. Mark Felt revealed in a Vanity Fair article that he was the informant known as Deep Throat who passed information about the 1972 Watergate break-in and scandal to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. |

In 2019, a mass shooting carried out by city employee DeWayne Craddock at the Municipal Complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia, killed 12 people and wounded four others before police shot and killed Craddock. |
