In 2013, at just six months old, Coco was rescued from an overcrowded municipal shelter in California and brought to the safety of our no-kill campus in Port Washington, NY. Suffering from incontinence and bowel trouble, this sweet pup was sure to be euthanized since an adopter would need to take on significant financial expenses, as well as daily care challenges.
A neurologist determined his condition was most likely due to an injury rather than a congenital defect. Since he could not fully empty his bladder, and to avoid the occasional small accident, Coco would need to wear diapers all the time and a simple rub of his tummy would help him get things moving. While these things would not prevent him from having a full, happy, and healthy life, he would require lifelong medical care. | In the spring of 2014, Coco was adopted by an amazing family who were ready to do everything they could to give Coco, now named Chachi, a wonderful life. His new human parents are amazing people who have developed a daily diaper schedule to ensure his complications are few. While there have been a few bumps along the way, Chachi has thrived in his new home. He even enjoys summers at the beach and leisurely walks in the neighborhood with a couple of canine siblings.
A monthly gift to the Pet Sponsorship Program helps provide ongoing medical care to more than 30 special-needs Sponsor Pets for the rest of their lives, even when they are adopted.
Today, Chachi is almost 11 years old, and he continues to be the apple of his loving parents’ eye.
