Weekend shooting leaves one victim dead, six injured

KANSAS CITY, MO – A violent shooting broke out in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westport Entertainment District early Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality and six others injured, according to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD).

At about 1:20 am, near the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway, police officers in the area heard multiple gunshots. Arriving on the scene, they came across several shooting victims.

Emergency medical crews ushered onto the scene, treated the victims, and rushed them to the nearest hospitals. While most victims presented non-life-threatening injuries, one male victim was unresponsive on the scene and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Preliminary KCPD investigations suggest that the shooting resulted from an argument that escalated. Captain Jake Becchina of KCPD highlighted that settling disputes with guns leads to excessive violence. He urged people to walk away, talk it out, or employ alternative resolution tactics rather than resorting to gunfire.

Given the large crowd present during the incident, KCPD believes numerous potential witnesses are available. Detectives are keen to speak to individuals present during the shooting and are actively collecting evidence from the crime scene. KCPD is encouraging anyone with relevant information to reach out directly to Homicide detectives or the TIPS Hotline anonymously. Information leading to an arrest, submitted anonymously to TIPS, is eligible for a reward of up to $25,000.
