Our first introduction to Hard Truth here at Seelbach’s was earlier this year with a single barrel bourbon from our friends at Bourbon Pursuit, but it’s time to give them a proper introduction to the site.
Hard Truth Distilling Co. began distilling in 2015 in the small upper rooms of Big Woods Pizza Co. in downtown Nashville, Indiana. The tiny craft distillery quickly grew, and, by 2017, construction had begun on a new facility set on a rolling, wooded, 325-acre property about a mile away from Hard Truth’s original home. They moved to that new facility in 2018 and have been distilling delicious sweet mash bourbons and ryes since.
Since their first whiskey release of Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye in November 2021, we’ve continued to hear people talk about how enjoyable and complex it is, especially for its accessibility. When they built their still in 2018, Bourbon was the first whiskey they barreled. It’s the one they’ve been waiting for the longest, and now, it’s here — authentically made from grain-to-glass in Brown County, Indiana.
The highlight of the Sweet Mash Rye is the mouthfeel. It is equally citrus and baking spices as it is creamy toffee and warming oak. The finish continues to ride down the backbones of spices.
A bit of a contrast, the High Road Rye is custardy and sweet forward, with spice continuing the sips. It lingers well, like a caramel frappuccino with honey drizzle.
The Sweet Mash Bourbon is creamy and coffee forward with toffee and cherry following close behind. The coffee continues through in a long finish with vanilla and softly warming oak and spice.
The Wheated Bottled-in-Bond has fresh wood that comes to the front on the palate but quickly followed up with butterscotch and cherry like the nose. Light pepper and oak on the finish, short to medium in length, light and silky.
The Mellencamp Farmer’s Reserve has a nose and palate that are both caramel spiced hot chocolate, with a lingering fruitiness and tingling spice continuing.
