Dear RJ,
In an ideal democracy, every registered voter would be included in voter mobilization efforts. Unfortunately, there is still a stark contrast in whose voices are prioritized in elections.
In 2017, when my husband called a Black voter in Mobile, Alabama, for the special Senate election, she told him, “I have had this number for 15 years; your call is the first political call I have ever received.” We have similar conversations with voters every year, even in 2023, for the Virginia General Assembly election. I may have shared this story before, but I am sharing it again because it shows the value and importance of our work at the Center for Common Ground.
Our responsibility is to ensure every voter of color understands the power of their voice and vote. We reach out to ALL voters of color in the states we operate in, not just those who vote regularly because we believe every voice deserves to be heard.
We plan to reach 18 million voters of color in at least seven states this year. That is why we have been working to raise $115,000 these past two months. With our fundraiser insert concluding on April 1, we’re just $5,000 away from our goal! Will you help us reach it?
