Howdy! On this day in 1841, the Houston/Austin Turnpike Company was granted a charter by The Republic of Texas to construct a road between Austin and Houston. The road was planned to start in Houston, traverse the Brazos River within five miles of San Felipe de Austin, and then proceed from the river directly to Austin. (See the story)

Texas Border Dispute with DOJ
The Department of Justice has asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the Eagle Pass border security dispute between Texas state authorities and the US Border Patrol.
Specifically, the DOJ wants the Border Patrol to regain access to the 2.5 miles of the Rio Grande currently controlled by the Texas National Guard. The area is a common crossing point for illegal immigrants, and Texas has placed concertina wire along the perimeter to prevent access by the public—or federal agents.
At a press conference, Governor Abbot responded to questions about the controversy: “Texas has the legal authority to control ingress into any geographic location in the state of Texas.”
Cowboys Out of the Playoffs
The Green Bay Packers beat the Cowboys 48-32 in last night’s NFC Wild Card playoff round, ending a season that showed plenty of promise but ended with a shocking defeat.
The Packers opened a 27-0 lead fueled by quarterback Jordan Love’s third down conversions and running back Aaron Jones’ bruising runs, and the momentum never really turned in a game that the Cowboys were favored to win by 7.5 points.
In his post-game press conference, Dak Prescott was blunt about his performance. “I sucked tonight,” he said. “Got it going a little bit later but none of that mattered at that point. Fought. That’s all I really know how to do.”
State Leaders Brace for Freeze
Governor Greg Abbott and state agency leaders provided an update on the polar vortex and urged residents to continue preparing their homes and businesses for the cold.
He warned that Texans should prepare for a “long period of extreme cold weather” and suggested that they avoid going outside until the storm passes.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) says they’re prepared to handle extreme conditions and has issued a Weather Watch. Presently, 153 warming centers are open throughout the state.
