Man caught hiding his mom’s dead body inside storage unit
SAN ANTONIO, TX – A disturbing case has surfaced in Texas, where a local man is accused of hiding his deceased mother’s corpse for more than two years. Rogelio Bernal, 53, was initially arrested on December 22 for an unrelated warrant. However, since then, Bernal has been charged with the alteration, destruction, or concealment of a human corpse.
The case took a turn when, during an auction at a San Antonio storage facility, a participant discovered a body inside a trash can in one of the storage units. Reports indicate that the facility’s property manager was able to identify the unit’s previous owner as Bernal, leading to his arrest on an existing warrant.
Bernal admitted during a police interview that the discovered remains belonged to his mother, who departed more than two years ago. He stated that his mother, under his care, tripped in the shower and considerably weakened on October 31, 2021. Despite her dire condition, Bernal reportedly refrained from calling emergency services due to his past legal encounters.
Post his mother’s death, Bernal attempted to hide the corpse in a closet in their shared apartment, concealing it with cleaning supplies and lye. Following Bernal’s eviction from the apartment due to a persistent gnat infestation, he moved his mother’s remains to a trash can in a rented storage unit.
Bernal is currently detained in the Bexar County Jail, and his bail is set at $75,000. The San Antonio Police Department has yet to comment on the incident.
