We’re less than one month from a potential government shutdown. And right-wing members of the House―including Speaker Mike Johnson and Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington―are rejecting the Senate’s bipartisan spending proposals. They’re demanding cuts to critical programs and services in 2024 funding bills, which will harm millions of vulnerable people and families.
You can see their longer-term plans to gut human services in their calls for a so-called “fiscal commission” to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, and much more. And, they’re considering demanding the creation of their closed-door commission in exchange for simply keeping the government running.
When Congress returns in January, they’ll have less than three weeks to cut a deal. We’re fighting for full-year bipartisan funding bills that do not cut critical human needs programs. And that includes no fiscal commission!

Earlier this month, House Budget Committee Chair Jodey Arrington held his first hearing on a proposed “fiscal commission,” which seeks to cut trillions of dollars from critical programs and services while raising no new revenue from those who can afford to pay more: millionaires, billionaires, and corporations.
And, in his first remarks as speaker this fall, Mike Johnson singled out the debt commission as a top priority.
