November Programs At The Railroad Museum

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is offering a variety of programs in November for all ages and all interests. The fall is a perfect time to visit and experience the Museum’s amazing collection of historic trains.

● SOLD OUT. Hudson River Rail Ramble. Wednesday, November 1.

Enjoy this private charter on board the historic tavern-lounge car No. 43, once used on the New York Central’s fleet of long-distance trains, on a roundtrip ride between Penn Station’s Moynihan Train Hall in New York City to Amtrak’s Albany-Rensselaer station. There will be breathtaking views of the Hudson River from big picture windows, a catered buffet-style lunch northbound and a catered buffet dinner southbound. The rate for current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is $489.00 per person. The non-member rate is $509.00 per person.

● Trains & Troops. Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 5, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This 23rd annual event salutes American railroads and the United States military, service men and women, including all those who have served, and are serving, overseas and on the home front in defense of our nation. Greet our men and women in uniform, including re-enactors, civilians and railroaders, representing the Civil War era forward to today. Explore the fascinating displays of equipment, vehicles, uniforms and memorabilia. Salute our veterans and active duty service personnel, along with the Lancaster Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. Be inspired by patriotic music performed by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band. Included in the regular Museum admission.

● 1940s Swing Dance. Saturday, November 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This toe-tapping tribute to the Greatest Generation features the fantastic Moonlighters big band playing live among the historic trains in the Museum’s Rolling Stock Hall. Dress to impress in your best 1940s vintage attire or military uniform, if you like, to add to the fun! There are light refreshments, and free on-site parking. Tickets are $25.00 per person general admission and $20.00 per person for students, U. S. military veterans, current U. S. service personnel (active, guard and reserves) and current Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvaniamembers. Tickets are available in the Whistle Stop Shop museum store during regular business hours or on Eventbrite.

● Registration Opens for Winter Virtual Railroading Merit Badge Workshops. Tuesday, November 7 at 9:00 a.m. Virtual workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, December 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Saturday, January 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 17, from 9:00 a.m. to

12:00 p.m. Designed for individual boys and girls, ages 11 to 17, this is a special opportunity for scouts who live both near to and far from the Museum to learn through the virtual use of the Museum’s images and artifacts, model trains and behind-the-scenes tours of historic equipment. All requirements are fulfilled on the day of the virtual workshop, except for the “At Home Requirement.” The cost is $24.00 for a 2 pack (1 individual scout and 1 accompanying adult) and $54.00 for a 4 pack (3 individual scouts and 1 accompanying adult).

● Sensory Hours. Tuesday, November 7, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Museum reduces lighting and sounds and maintains a low attendance for individuals with special sensory needs. Quiet spaces are set up for breaks and a few of the historic trains will be open, with Museum staff present to answer questions. The cost is $7.00 per person for ages 3 and up and is free of charge for ages 2 and under, personal assistant aides and current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

● Story Time With The Educator. Tuesday, November 7, from 3:30 p.m. to

5:00 p.m. Designed for children ages 2 through preK and led by a Museum educator, this month’s Story Time features a reading of “The Turkey Train” by Steve Metzger, along with a craft activity where kids can create their own turkey passenger. When turkeys ride the train, getting there is half the fun.

● SOLD OUT. Railroading Merit Badge Workshop. Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Museum is the perfect setting for boys and girls ages 11 to 17 to learn and earn the merit badge in railroading, engaging with historic artifacts and model trains. This workshop features a variety of railroad-themed activities including equipment tours, demonstrations and a G-scale model railroad simulation. All requirements are fulfilled in a single day.   The cost is $24.00 for a 2 pack (1 individual scout and 1 accompanying adult) and $54.00 for a 4 pack (3 individual scouts and 1 accompanying adult).
