Believe it or not, the beloved condiment that we all know as ketchup was actually once sold as medicine. In the 19th century, ketchup was touted as a cure-all for everything from indigestion to diarrhea. The recipe for this “medicinal” ketchup differed greatly from the condiment we know today; it included ingredients such as spices, vinegar, and mushrooms, as well as various herbs and botanicals. While it’s unclear whether or not this ketchup truly provided any health benefits, it’s fascinating to think that our favorite burger topping was once consumed for its supposed medicinal properties.
