The human body is a complex machine, and every part has a purpose. While most bones are joined to other bones, there is a rogue bone that stands alone: the hyoid bone. Located in the neck, the hyoid bone is shaped like a horseshoe and is suspended by muscles and ligaments. It has been dubbed the “floating bone” as it does not attach to any other bone in the body, but rather acts as a sort of anchor for the tongue and other muscles involved in swallowing and speaking.
