How to be a Successful Online Learner

The advantages of distance education are its flexibility, affordability, and accessibility for a more significant part of society. This sounds very attractive – however, despite these beneficial features, success requires the student’s ability to engage in the learning process independently and actively. The nature of online learning encourages self-directed learning, and online students must be more self-reliant than their peers on campus. This is one of the reasons dropout rates are higher in distance education – many students think that the program will be easier, exams will be less challenging, and so on. The reality is that distance education can be more challenging than an in-person degree program.

Self-regulated learning requires three main characteristics of the students:

  1. Self-observation that is referring to the students’ ability to monitor their own actions
  2. Self-judgement, required to evaluate performance and take responsibility for it
  3. Self-reaction, meaning, students must take actions of their performance is not satisfactory

Luckily, these traits can be improved, and the school provides a supportive environment for that. While the primary goal in school is learning, success requires students’ ability to be aware of their progress, monitor their knowledge, and regulate their learning of necessary. This awareness is called metacognition. Students who use metacognitive strategies show academic success.
