We had a great visit with our friends at Prohibition Craft Spirits last month selecting our next round Nulu barrels. Spoiler alert, we picked some super tasty barrels. After we finished sampling all the whiskies, Chase brought out a few teq… er… blue agave spirits for us to try. To be honest, there wasn’t a bad one in the bunch. That said, it was sample four that really had a unanimous ‘yes’ from all in attendance.
This is 100% blue agave from Jalisco, Mexico. It spent its first four years in a 27 year light whiskey barrel before finishing its last year-and-a-half in a Nulu Double Oaked barrel. It was barrel entry at 110 proof, but bottled at a modest 125.2 proof.
We wanted to celebrate Dee’s birthday with this barrel – so grab a bottle or six, pour a shot, raise it, and throw one back for Dee. (Once you taste it, you’re going to wish you grabbed more.)
Rich brown sugar from the barrel aging with crisp lime and minerality from the spirit on the nose.
The palate is cushy and pillowy initially with this dulce de leche sweetness and sweet oakiness, but then a beautiful citrus finishing.
If you are a bourbon drinker who has ever been curious to dance in the agave world, this is the perfect barrel for you.
