Did you know that babies are born without one key bone in their body? That’s right – they don’t have knee caps! As strange as it may sound, knee caps are actually a type of sesamoid bone that typically develops in the first few years of life. This means that when babies are born, their knees are essentially made up of cartilage and it’s not until they start to stand and walk that their bodies begin to produce the bony patellas that we all know and love. While it might seem odd, it’s actually a pretty amazing feat of growth and development that our bodies are capable of!
