Chipping with a hybrid makes a lot of sense.
Unlike an iron, it won’t dig into the turf and cause fat shots. It’s
also extra forgiving on miss-hits – the ball tends to go pretty
straight when you catch the toe or heel.
If you haven’t tried it before, here’s a short lesson where I
demonstrate the benefits of the hybrid chip:
Accuracy Makes a Hybrid Great for Chipping
Hybrids aren’t foolproof around the greens, of course.
For one thing, they tend to be around 40 inches long, so you
have to grip way down for control.
Most of them have 20° – 28° of loft, too, so it’s hard to get much
height on your shots.
And since they’re designed for distance, hybrids can send the
ball rocketing off the face and over the green.
Now let’s take all those drawbacks and turn them around…
Creating a hybrid with a wedge-length shaft…
The loft of an 8-iron, and…
A face made for greenside touch shots…
That would be quite the short game weapon, wouldn’t it?
You bet it would. And guess what? It’s already here.
