The D-backs wrapped up the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday pulling in a haul of 21 players, with an emphasis on college arms.
Their first selection, Tommy Troy, fit the mold of what the D-backs have looked for in recent years from their top pick – an athletic, up-the-middle-of-the-diamond performer. They also felt particularly good about getting Virginia Tech outfielder Jack Hurley in the third round after a lot of forecasts had him going in the first two rounds.
The D-backs also loaded up on college arms, especially late in the draft. They picked 15 pitchers in total, and nine of their 10 picks on Day 3 were arms. D-backs GM Mike Hazen has spoken over the last year about wanting to have more power arms in the bullpen, and the D-backs took several big-armed relievers such as Ryan Bruno (7th round) out of Stanford.
