Like many Americans, our family will spend the fourth of July enjoying BBQ and watching fireworks. It is a wonderful American holiday celebrating our nation’s freedom which I have enjoyed with wild enthusiasm since I was a boy. As I have gotten older, served in the military myself and now have young boys of my own, I have a much deeper appreciation of the day’s meaning.
I recently found an old July 4th video post of my Dad’s from 2017 where he reminded us: “It’s important to remember that we enjoy the freedom to do these very things because of the brave men and women who sacrificed to ensure our liberty. So today, I encourage all citizens to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by the millions of men and women that have given their lives to guarantee the liberty we celebrate at this holiday. And to America’s active duty, reservists and guardsmen, as well as our veterans, thank you. Thank you for answering the nation’s call to serve. Your bravery, sacrifice and selfless service make us free.”
Today, as we watch the news of those around the world fighting for their freedoms, including the people of Ukraine, I hope you will join me in a moment of reflection and gratitude for the freedoms we share.
