Golf Transition Update:
The summer golf course transition is underway! The cool season grasses were sprayed out the week of May 22nd. This spray eradicates all of the winter grasses, with little effect on the summer Bermuda grass and allows the Bermuda grass to begin recovering from the overseed. Early results show a good stand of Bermuda grass and should favor a successful transition. Remember Bermuda grass likes heat, but it loves the humidity. June is a tough month, typically there is plenty of heat with very little humidity, so Bermuda grass is not as active in spreading and filling in areas during the month of June. Rain, humidity, and dew point are key in Bermuda grass growth, a good gauge is to watch the dew point, when the dew point is above 52 degrees Bermuda grass is more likely to have growth with its rhizomes and stolons spreading. The monsoon season is just beginning and is usually more active in mid-July. The maintenance team has started to sod some areas and will continue through the summer, cultural practices will also continue.
We would like to remind Members that the golf course will be closed July 5th-11th. During this closure the maintenance team will verti-cut, aerify, and top-dress with sand on all the greens. We are also scheduled to Deep-Tine aerify the fairways, which will allow for better water, air, and nutrient movement in the soil and help with compaction. Fertilizer and soil amendments will also be applied to the entire golf course at this time, along with the continued cultural practices including verti-cutting and slicing.
