Peter,

April is the Month of the Military Child, a month dedicated to recognizing and supporting the children of our servicemembers. There are more than 1.6 million military children, all of whom make their own sacrifices because of their parents’ service.

Yuri Eilmes, son of Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas A. Eilmes USMC, is no different. Like many military children, Yuri moved every 2-3 years growing up, from Japan to Alaska to North Carolina and back. With each move came the need to adapt to a new environment, culture and even language.

Between the frequent relocating and then determining how to pay for higher education, Yuri has learned to succeed when thrown out of his comfort zone.

Because of your support, Yuri is now a very grateful three-time MCSF Scholarship recipient who is making the most of his higher education. His exposure to different cultures as a kid inspired him to pursue International Relations and Global/Asian Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

Yuri also left us with a great piece of advice he learned from his father. Read more about Yuri’s story and learn what he shared with us.

We’re very excited to see where Yuri’s studies take him, and are incredibly grateful to all the MCSF donors who make stories like his a reality.

Semper Fi,

Colonel Odie Van Opdorp USMC (Ret.)
