Last Week This Morning: Republicans point fingers

Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️

Threats to election workers. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is repurposing former AG Mark Bronvich’s “Election Integrity Unit” to protect voting rights and to investigate the MAGA fake elector scheme. Mayes will also focus on the increase in threats to election workers that have caused resignations across the state and use the unit to prosecute any election-related threats. Under Brnovich, the unit investigated election conspiracy theories made up by sore loser candidates. But instead of revealing findings from the investigation that disproved false claims of widespread voter fraud he hid evidence and lied to Arizonans.

Republicans point fingers at each other. And no one wants to take responsibility for the unsubstantiated allegations of widespread bribery that were aired at a joint hearing of the Senate and House elections committees. During the presentation, Gov. Hobbs and other members of the legislature were accused without evidence of being bribed by the Sinaloa drug cartel. GOP leaders are pointing fingers at freshman Rep. Liz Harris who is linked to Qanon instead of taking responsibility for allowing yet another conspiracy theory to be publicized at the legislature.

The GOP’s power grab. Republican lawmakers are refusing to hear Democrat-introduced bills unless 16+ Republicans sign on, essentially requiring a supermajority to pass legislation. This means that just a few Republicans can control whether legislation moves forward or not, even if it has bipartisan support from a majority of lawmakers. The rule is just another anti-democratic tactic the GOP is using in their power grab, because they know they aren’t truly representing the people of Arizona.
