Peter, it’s all too clear that our country is experiencing a dire mental health crisis — and our children and teenagers aren’t exempt.
Our mission at Inseparable is to fundamentally improve mental health care policy — to take care of ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. We fight for the resources our children and youth need to effectively overcome the mental health crisis they face. It’s our mandate to help children thrive.
According to a new CDC study, the share of American high school students over the last 13 years who say they feel “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” rose from 26% to 44%. This is the highest level of teenage sadness ever recorded.
Extensive social media use, social isolation, and the stressful world around us are propelling the increase in teen sadness, according to an article in The Atlantic written by Derek Thompson.
It can feel overwhelming to experience the broken pieces of our mental healthcare system. It’s even more frustrating to not see our elected leaders prioritize this crisis.
That’s why at Inseparable, we spend a lot of time listening to understand the current state of America’s mental health.
We’re doing our part to combat this mental health crisis by fighting to:
Eliminate the treatment gap
Invest in prevention and early intervention
Stop criminalizing mental illness by right-sizing our crisis response
When we work together, we will reform our system — but only if we demand it. Together we will use our voices to urge our leaders in Congress to take immediate action and address the mental health crisis all too many of us are experiencing. Speaking out is how we can take care of each other — and thrive.
Be kind to yourself and to each other this week, Peter. Thanks for being in this fight with us.
