You Must Use the New Form I-485 Starting
December 23, 2022
Dear Stakeholder,
This Friday, December 23, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is changing which edition of the Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, it will accept. There is no grace period.
What This Means
If you are planning to submit Form I-485 in the upcoming days, please note:
- USCIS will reject the 07/15/22 edition of Form I-485 if it is postmarked on or after December 23, 2022.
- USCIS will reject the 12/23/22 edition of Form I-485 if it is postmarked on or before December 22, 2022.
You can find the 12/23/22 edition of the form in the “Forms and Document Downloads” section of USCIS’ Form I-485 page. USCIS posted it as a preview in November.
Why Did USCIS Update the Form I-485?
On September 9, 2022, USCIS announced a final rule concerning the public charge ground of inadmissibility to help clarify and bring consistency to how it applies this ground of inadmissibility. This final rule goes into effect on December 23, 2022, and the 12/23/22 edition of Form I-485 allows USCIS to collect certain information required by the rule. |
