It’s time our healthcare system worked that way. Right now, health plans continue to violate the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, a federal law that prohibits health insurance companies from unfair coverage of mental health and substance use conditions.
We need to come together right now and push Congress to hold plans accountable to the law. Everyone deserves to have access to the mental health care they need.
Parity is fundamental to accessible, affordable health care for everyone. In the end, it requires insurers to provide the same level of benefits for mental and substance use treatment as they do for other medical care.
It’s why Congress passed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, but without enforcement, it is toothless. We need to hold these health plans accountable to the law.
Right now, we are facing “egregious violations” of parity law, especially with people impacted by mental health disorders. For example, more than 1.2 million people were denied benefits for nutritional counseling for mental health conditions like anorexia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and bulimia nervosa.
It’s okay to not be okay. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. Crisis Text Line also provides free, 24/7, confidential support via text message to people in crisis when they text HOME to 741741.
