We are just 98 days out from the midterm elections, and team AOTL Michigan is working hard to make sure Michigan voters understand the stakes and have everything they need to vote – and vote the entire ballot – this fall. The people we elect in November will make decisions about voting rights, electoral maps, and every other issue we care about. If you are reading this email, you can make a difference – by talking with your friends and family, joining our voter outreach efforts, and working in your community to make sure folks are registered and the polls are staffed. You can start by filling out this interest form to let us know how you’d like to get involved. This will help us make decisions about where to put our energy this fall. We know we can’t do everything, but we can all do something!
LITIGATION UPDATE
Defense of Fair Maps in Michigan Continues
Banerian v. Benson
In Michigan, the NRAF continues to support voters who have intervened in a case to protect the fair map passed by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC),
an independent redistricting commission composed of ordinary citizens created through a 2018 ballot measure. with bipartisan support after months of considering public comments from voters around the state. A lawsuit filed by Republican voters, however, claimed that the Commission’s congressional map violates the U.S. Constitution. While the NRAF helped Michigan voters defeat this challenge before a three-judge federal panel, the plaintiffs have indicated they will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The NRAF will continue to stand with Michigan voters to defend fair maps.
