We won’t sugarcoat what happened last week: Sen. Joe Manchin and Senate Republicans shattered our best opportunity to pass comprehensive climate legislation that protects communities, wildlife and nature.
“Disappointed” is an understatement. We’re outraged. But above all else, we’re determined to bounce back, because losing this fight is not an option.
Thankfully, the president responded, saying he would take “strong executive action” on climate if Congress failed. This is his chance to show us what “strong” means. President Biden must bring to bear the full power of the White House and federal agencies, including steps like taking the Arctic Refuge off the market and ending new oil and gas drilling in U.S. waters.
We cannot—we will not—let fossil fuel CEOs and their lobbyists and political cronies decide the future.
