Did you know that June is Men’s Health Month? This month is all about encouraging men to take care of themselves by eating right, exercising, and working to prevent disease.
When we talk about health, we also mean mental health. This month we are encouraging men to prioritize their mental health as part of their overall health.
Society’s expectations and traditional gender roles may play a role in why men are less likely to discuss or seek help for their mental health problems. Without having an open, comfortable space to talk, it is hard for many to speak out.
Even if you don’t hear as many men talk openly about their mental health, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t experiencing mental health issues. Over six million men experience depressioneach year and four times more men than women die by suicide in America. Even though 10% of people with eating disorders are men, they are less likely to seek treatment than women.
It’s okay to not be okay. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Crisis Text Line also provides free, 24/7, confidential support via text message to people in crisis when they text HOME to 741741.
