We have been calling on Congress to take action to address our growing mental health crisis and now that time has finally come.
A bipartisan group of 20 senators took a major step forward by releasing a framework to address gun violence and our nation’s mental health crisis. But this is only the framework, so we need to ensure that the final legislation includes things like expanding school mental health services, improving crisis response, and increasing access to behavioral health services.
We need to make sure Congress prioritizes mental health and sees it through to the end. This is not the time to lose momentum and stop fighting for mental health.
Clearly, these 20 senators do not encompass all of the Senate. In the end, we need 60 senators to say YES to the forthcoming gun violence and mental health legislation.
There is still an urgent mental health crisis. If this legislation passes, it will support improvements in mental health care for our friends, children, and communities.
We are so close to seeing important investments in mental health care and we can’t let this go.
