Last Week This Morning: Roe under attack

Roe under attack. Last Monday, a draft Supreme Court majority opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked. Republicans have been working for decades to limit the freedom to have an abortion. If Roe is overturned, abortion would no longer be protected at the federal level and would be left to the states. In Arizona, a 15-week abortion ban would take effect later this year, and possibly a complete ban on abortion without exception due to an archaic, pre-statehood law. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to hold a vote to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade, but if the Senate doesn’t end the filibuster, it won’t pass.

Ducey limits successors’ power. Gov. Doug Ducey signed legislation that will limit the power of future Arizona governors to use emergency public health tools during a future pandemic. The law won’t take effect until after Ducey is no longer in office. Ducey was criticized by Arizona Republicans for being too aggressive in his pandemic response, despite his hands-off approach as thousands of Arizonans died and hospitals struggled.

Gosar spends big. The congressman who consistently criticizes government’s “irresponsible spending” spends the most on taxpayer funded travel. Somehow, he’s spent more than any other House member in the last 5 years. Questions have arisen about Gosar’s use of funds, though his office claims they are legitimate.

Hands off our bodies. On Tuesday night, Arizonans came together to protest the news around abortion outside the Arizona Capitol.

Sit in to save America. Join fellow Arizonans in Tucson on May 23rd for a rally and march to call on Senators Sinema and Manchin to end the filibuster. Following the march, there will be a civil disobedience action to escalate the demands.
