Exposing the truth about China

Dear RJ,

My friend was recently put in jail. His crimes? He is a believer (a practicing Catholic). He advocates for free speech and religious freedom. And he fearlessly exposed the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for its many human rights violations.

Tragically, Jimmy Lai, world-renowned entrepreneur and pro-democracy advocate, is locked in prison.

Beijing is using its immense power and overreach to try to silence him. But we refuse to let this happen.

Peter, let me give a brief introduction. I am Rev. Robert Sirico, president emeritus of the Acton Institute, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization that produces podcasts, journals, research, and documentaries that make the moral case for religious liberty and free markets.

In 2014, the Acton Institute produced the hit documentary, Poverty, Inc. The film exposed the corruption and BIG business behind international poverty aid. Poverty, Inc. was an official selection at 50 film festivals, earning 15 major awards in the process.

Now we are exposing what the CCP and Xi Jinping are desperately trying to hide.

This spring, we will proudly release our brand-new documentary film—The Hong Konger. It’s a story about the fight for freedom in Hong Kong, led by the inspiring Jimmy Lai.

Jimmy grew up in rural communist China. His family was suffering in dire poverty, and so when he was only 12, Jimmy traveled to Hong Kong. Thanks to his newfound freedom, his entrepreneurial spirit, and years of hard work, Jimmy started the Giordano clothing company, which rapidly grew to a globally recognized brand.

Eventually, Jimmy would turn his attention to media, where he built several successful companies. Before he turned 60, he was a billionaire. And as Jimmy thrived, so did Hong Kong.

But then the Chinese Communist Party showed up …

The CCP aggressively suppressed the freedom and civil liberties enjoyed for so long by the citizens of Hong Kong. And so Jimmy took to the streets. He deliberately placed himself on the frontlines of the Hong Kong protests so government officials would see his face.

His newspaper, Apple Daily, became the biggest critic of the CCP, and so it had Jimmy and key members of his staff arrested—and his company shut down.

Jimmy risked everything. He gave up the life of a billionaire entrepreneur in Hong Kong to become a dissident fighting for basic human freedoms threatened by a Beijing-inspired clampdown. Now he is locked in prison and his future is uncertain.

The Chinese government wants him silenced, but Jimmy Lai’s fight for freedom in Hong Kong is far from done.

I am hoping to raise $50,000 to crowdsource our marketing efforts behind this incredible documentary.

Sadly, you won’t hear Jimmy Lai’s story from Hollywood or the corporate media. It’s why I’m asking you to help us reach our goal. More than 80% of our funding comes from the generous contributions of individual Acton supporters.

If you’re inspired by Jimmy’s story and the fight for freedom in Hong Kong, then please support this incredible documentary today.
