A Word from Hayner Director,
David Wion
Hopefully, the winter snows and subzero temperatures are behind us once again. I am so looking forward to Spring.  This past fall, our dedicated Horticultural Committee planted hundreds of flower bulbs around the Hayner, and we can’t wait to see how beautiful they will be when they begin blooming. The amazing colors of spring will make the Hayner even more spectacular! But the wonder of spring isn’t just happening outside the Hayner—spring means increased events & programming inside the Hayner as well. As you can see from all the activities in this E-News, we truly have something for everyone here at the Hayner!
Hope to see you soon—

David

This exhibition of artistic creations by Troy’s talented art students will be on display until April 3, 2022. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Art teachers from 14 schools throughout Troy select work completed by local art students for the exhibit. Students consider it an honor to have work chosen for this prestigious show. Teachers use a variety of mediums in the classroom to teach art history, aesthetics, criticism, and skill. This display illustrates the students’ artistic responses to the instruction they receive in the classroom. Members of the community are encouraged to come and see the talent and skill of our local art students that will be displayed throughout the historic Hayner Mansion.

Pysanka – Ukranian Eggs
Solarium
Ukrainian Eggs or “pysanka,” are now on display at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. Artist Christina Pereyma O’Neal is a first generation Ukrainian American and a Troy resident. Following family folk art tradition, Christina, her late mother Aka Pereyma, her sister Vaka Pereyma and her daughter Helen O’Neal created these symbolic decorated eggs. These eggs contain important symbolism both universal and personal. Traditionally the eggs were given mythological powers and were used as talismans to ward off misfortune. Christina tells of the legend of a monster who lives in the Carpathian Mountains. It is said that if people are kind to one another and faithfully make the pysanka eggs, the chains will tighten on the monster in the mountain. In this way the decorated eggs offer protection.
