A Word from Hayner Director,
David Wion

Winter has definitely arrived! Even though the outside temperatures are sometimes negative, it is still warm and cozy in the Hayner!  In February, we have an awesome art exhibit on display, a special Valentine’s concert, and interesting adult and children’s classes to attend.  We are also taking reservations for Mrs. Hayner’s Birthday Tea in April and our Hayner Hits the Road trip to Stan Hywet Manor in July.  There is always something great happening at the Hayner–hope to see you soon!!

David

Assistant Director Rachael Boezi is the inspiration behind a new collaboration between the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center and the Dayton Opera Artist-in-Residence Program. Two rising stars will perform a concert in the Hayner Ballroom. Amandalynne Perzyk and Henry Benson will share opera arias and duets, classical art song, and musical theatre selections. In honor of Valentines’ Day, this special concert will look at all aspects of love in a program infused with both humor and heart.

Dayton Opera’s Artist-in Residence Program provides training for young singers that serves as a bridge to professional opera careers. Artists are selected by audition and, in addition to their training schedule, they work together to perform education and outreach programs in our community, helping to the ensure the future of this beautiful art form in our area.

Henry is a native of Wisconsin and a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (M.M. 2021). He is an awarded tenor, winning the Encouragement Award from the 2020 Wisconsin District of the Met Opera National Council and took 4th place in the American International Czech and Slovak Voice Competition. A Soprano from Rochester Hills, Michigan, Amandalynne has also received an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition. She completed her Master’s work at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in 2019. Stephen Variames is the pianist for this concert. He is a resident of Denver, Colorado and a graduate of Baylor University, Oklahoma City University and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Most recently, he has been a resident artist with Opera Colorado; past companies include Pensacola Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh and Nashville Opera. He is also the recipient of multiple grants for his opera “Leaving Vaughan Behind.”

Hayner’s fifth annual Jazz In March concert series will take place in the Ballroom featuring Mike Wade & the Jazz Mafia. Mike’s trumpet is celebrated as one of Ohio’s finest. He is the founder of at least four bands that speak to as many distinct jazz genres. Mike Wade Quartet is “Straight Ahead Jazz”; Mike Wade and the Mighty Groovers is his “Smooth Jazz” band; Mike Wade & the Nasty NATI Brass Band offers a genre he calls, “New Orleans meets Midwest Funk.” The band that you will find at the Hayner on March 5 is Mike Wade & the Jazz Mafia. Jazz Mafia is his signature “Bop” sound. Bop jazz is dependent upon instrumental virtuosity, lively tempo, complex chord progression and has an improvisational base.

This concert series is hosted by pianist, Keigo Hirakawa. Keigo will interview Mr. Wade at 7 pm for insight into his long career and his musical life. Keigo will then accompany him on the piano for the subsequent concert along with an upright bassist and percussionist.

Free reservations are necessary. Visit: TroyHayner.org/Jazz-in-March
